Projects: MV Awards

MV Awards is a programme which rewards young people aged 16-25 for the volunteering work that they take part in. Over 1000 young people in North Lanarkshire having gained recognition through MV Awards since the year 2000.

The great thing about MV Awards is that it’s easy to get involved and doesn’t involved lots of paperwork. The MV Awards work is that young people aged 16-25 involved in volunteering work can gain certificates for the work they are doing according to the number of hours volunteering work they have completed.

Having a MV Award certificate is an excellent addition to a young person’s CV, particularly as more and more employers are recognising the value of volunteering work. It also displays a positive attitude - the fact that you have clearly used your spare time well by participating in volunteering work. MV Awards is also a great way of meeting other young people who are involved in volunteering. So why not get involved?!

MV Award Certificates Achievable

MV Awards offers recognition certificates at three levels:

• When you complete 50 hours volunteering work
• When you complete 100 hours volunteering work
• When you complete 200 hours volunteering work, you will receive a special certificate signed by Scotland’s First Minister

All MV Award certificates are signed by ministers from the Scottish Parliament.

The Starting Point for Involvement

It’s really easy to get involved in the MV Awards programme. If you are aged 16-25 and are either currently involved in a volunteering activity, or would like to become involved in a volunteering activity, then you can register as a MV participant by contacting VANL.

From there, you will be given timesheets to keep a note of the hours volunteering work you have completed, and once 50 hours volunteering is completed, you are eligible to receive your first certificate. MV Awards winners are often invited along to local awards event to receive their recognition certificates.

Registering for MV Award Certificates

There are three sheets to be completed for getting each young person registered for receiving their certificates – some parts to be completed by the volunteer, and some parts to be completed by their volunteer co-ordinator at the organisation (this would be a person who supervises the volunteer). Here is what needs filled in for each volunteer:

• The young volunteer needs to complete Registration Form P1 with their personal details and signature
• The young volunteer needs to complete Volunteer Form A recording their hours of volunteering. This can be backdated to when they started volunteering
• For requesting certification, the volunteer co-ordinator needs to complete and sign organisation form P3 to verify that the young volunteer has completed the hours and is due their 50, 100 or 200 hour certificate (if they have completed 100 or 200 hours, they will also get the other certificates automatically).
