Bellshill & Mossend YMCA - Mission Statement

 ‘Bellshill and Mossend YMCA is committed to working in partnership with the community and in particular with those who are marginalized and those who are young, providing support and quality programmes aimed at social, physical and spiritual development’.

The duties of the trustees are:

  • To ensure that the association complies with its governing documents (Memorandum and Articles of Association and Procedural Standards), charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
  • To ensure that the association pursues its objectives as defined in its governing documents and meets the core standards of good governance.
  • To ensure the association applies its recourses exclusively in pursuance of its objects i.e. the association must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objects, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are.
  • To contribute actively to the board of trustees’ role in giving strategic direction to the association, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
  • To safeguard the good name and values of the association and the wider YMCA movement at all times.
  • To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the association.
  • To ensure the financial stability of the association.
  • To protect and manage the properties of the association and to ensure the proper investment of the association’s funds.
  • To appoint the relevant senior staff members and to manage their performance appropriately.
  • In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should exercise any specific skills, knowledge or experiences they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions.  This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focussing on key issues and providing advice and guidance on new initiatives or on other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

Trustee Person Specification – trustees should display

  • A serious commitment to work towards the achievement of the World YMCA goals as stated in the Paris Basis, Kampala Principals and Challenge 21 statement of purpose. Challenge 21 states that the YMCA is a world-wide Christian, ecumenical, voluntary movement for women and men with special emphasis on and the genuine involvement of young people and that it seeks to share the Christian ideal of building a human community of justice with love, peace and reconciliation for the fullness of life for all creation.
  • A serious commitment to the association – fellow trustees, staff, volunteers, service user and partners.
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the role of a trustee.
  • Sound strategic vision.
  • Good, independent judgement.
  • An ability to think creatively.
  • An ability to engage in constructive debate, communicate clearly and ask insightful questions.
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team.

Trustees must also commit to full membership of the association:  full membership of the YMCA is a fellowship of persons who are committed to the Christian way of life, and who seek to associate themselves with other Christian service through the association.

Trustees will also be required to take part in any training that is deemed appropriate and appointed will be subject to satisfactory PVG checks.

Full members of the association will serve for three years, one third retiring annually, but being eligible for re-election.

Trustees are unpaid but out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Any trustee who misses three consecutive meetings without approval or submission of apology will be deemed to have left the service of the association and will be automatically removed from the position of trustee.
