James Keir

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of James Keir, a member of the Board of Directors at Voluntary Action North Lanarkshire. After battling courageously against cancer for several years, Jim or Junior as he was known by many, passed away at home on Saturday 29 October 2011.

As a resident of Salsburgh, Jim was a passionate advocate for the area and assisted many local groups over the years in meeting their objective to improve the quality of life for residents. He was widely known as one of Salsburgh and North Lanarkshire’s most active citizens, and gave countless hours to volunteering to help many local organisations and individuals over many years.

Jim has been actively involved in supporting local voluntary sector structures for the last 17 years. In 1994, he joined MAVS (Monklands Association for Voluntary Services), and served as a Management Committee member and Officer Bearer until 2006, when Jim played a key role in supporting MAVS & CAVOC (Community and Voluntary Organisations) to form the new local authority-wide agency CVS North Lanarkshire.

Continuing his involvement into the new organisation, Jim was Director and Company Secretary for a further four years before guiding the organisation through a second amalgamation process, this time to form Voluntary Action North Lanarkshire, the new Third Sector Interface organisation for the local area, in 2010. Jim was one of four interim Board members that were appointed to set up and develop Voluntary Action North Lanarkshire.

Not one to lie down to illness, Jim showed courage and determination as he continued his volunteering as a Director of Voluntary Action North Lanarkshire during 2010 and 2011. Jim was a friendly face around both the organisation’s Airdrie and Wishaw premises, delivering fruit and always taking time to speak with and support the staff and volunteers of the organisation in any way he could.

The Board and staff of Voluntary Action North Lanarkshire will sorely miss not only Jim’s valuable contribution as a Director of the organisation and his genuine commitment to supporting the voluntary sector, but also his sense of humour and his ability as a raconteur to entertain with varied accounts of his life and times.

Jim’s contribution to the voluntary sector has been much valued, and his sense of responsibility to supporting local volunteers and organisations right up until his death typifies the person that Jim was.

To Jim’s wife Edna and his family, we send our deepest condolences.
